Don Deal: The Seahawks have added yet another top player to the roster.
The Seattle Seahawks waived wide receiver Cody Thompson following their Week 3 victory over the Carolina Panthers, one week before they took on the New York Giants in Week 5.
The decision to waive Thompson is probably not a huge surprise to those who understand that his primary contribution to the team is on special teams, where he will probably be replaced when Dareke Young returns from injured reserve in the coming weeks.
The timing of the move could be viewed as unexpected, though, as Young is still not cleared to return to practice.
However, it was not shocking that the Seahawks swiftly promoted practice squad member Jon Rhattigan to the special team, filling the void left by Thompson’s waiver.
Rhattigan has played the third-most special teams snaps through the first three games, tied with a few other players, but his promotion has freed up a spot on the practice squad.
As per the report by Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, the practice squad spot has been occupied.
After clearing waivers, Cody Thompson was re-signed by the Seahawks to the practice squad. Thus, it was merely a matter of rearranging the roster to accommodate Rhattigan on the 53. On game day, Thompson is now eligible to be elevated three times off the practice squad.

In conclusion, Thompson was waived in order to make room for Rhattigan to be promoted to the 53-man roster, which in turn opened up Thompson’s spot on the practice squad.
