Will Hardy has been appointed as the Utah Jazz’s new coach, the team announced on Wednesday.
For the first time, the former assistant of the Boston Celtics will lead an NBA team. Quin Snyder, who decided to leave the Jazz earlier this month after eight seasons, will be replaced by him.
ESPN and The Athletic first reported the agreement between Hardy and the Jazz.
During his one-season stay in Boston, Hardy contributed to the Celtics’ NBA Finals run. His previous 11 seasons were spent with the San Antonio Spurs, where he began as an intern in basketball operations, advanced to the video room, and eventually worked his way up to assistant coach Gregg Popovich, the all-time leader in wins and five-time NBA champion.
Additionally, Hardy supported Popovich when USA Basketball competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2019 Basketball World Cup. In order to work for another former Spurs assistant, Ime Udoka, who led the Celtics to the playoffs in his first season as head coach, Hardy left San Antonio for Boston.
And it makes sense that the Jazz felt Hardy was the right hire, considering the success of the Popovich coaching line in the NBA.
