Super Bowl 58: The 49ers of San Francisco rally to force a rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs

A thrilling comeback by the San Francisco 49ers against the Kansas City Chiefs set up a Super Bowl rematch in Las Vegas.

In order to advance to the NFL’s championship game for the fourth time in five years, defending champions Kansas City defeated the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 in the first of Sunday’s Conference Championship games.

Five-time champion San Francisco was trailing the Detroit Lions, one of just four NFL teams to never have appeared in the Super Bowl, 24-7 at the half.

With less than ten minutes remaining, the 49ers took the lead for the first time after scoring 17 points in a thrilling eight-minute stretch to tie the game.

Following their 34-31 victory, the hosts advanced to the next round of the playoffs, where Kansas City defeated San Francisco 31-20 in Miami.

The Chiefs have the opportunity to solidify their dynasty by winning their third NFL title in five years and making history by being the first team to win back-to-back titles since the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004 after winning Super Bowl 57 last year.

Reaction: 49ers defeat Lions to set up Chiefs and 49ers in the Super Bowl

Due to their stellar roster, San Francisco has been the clear favorite to win Super Bowl 58 since late November, while Kansas City was participating in the AFC Championship game for the sixth consecutive year.

However, both teams had to work extremely hard in the final two weeks of the playoffs to guarantee their spots on the Strip on February 11.

The 49ers, who started as the number one seed in the NFC Conference, had to battle back from a steep deficit to defeat Detroit after surviving a scare against Green Bay in the divisional round.

The Chiefs, on the other hand, have demonstrated their championship caliber by winning at Buffalo and now Baltimore, the AFC’s top seed, despite having to play on the road in the playoffs for the first time during their recent run of dominance.
