Sad news: The Green Bay Packers have just announced one of their best players suspensions due to domestic violence
(AP) — GREEN BAY, WI Jaire Alexander, the cornerback for the Green Bay Packers, was given a one-game suspension by the team for his actions during the coin toss that preceded their Sunday 33-30 victory over Carolina.
Alexander’s suspension was announced by Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst on Wednesday due to his actions that were detrimental to the team. Alexander’s suspension prevents him from participating in the Packers’ (7-8) Sunday night game against Minnesota (7-8), a game that is crucial to both teams’ chances of making the playoffs.
Alexander showed up for the coin toss even though he hadn’t been chosen as the Panthers’ team captain. By initially stating that the Packers preferred to play defense first rather than stating that they deferred the option, he almost cost his team. Alex Kemp, the referee, asked Alexander to elaborate, which gave the Packers a break.
We never make this decision lightly, and suspending a player is never an easy one. We regretfully had to take this action as a result of Jaire’s actions before the game in Carolina, Gutekunst stated in a statement.
“Everyone in our organization is expected to prioritize the team. Despite our disappointment, Jaire and I had a productive conversation this morning, and we anticipate that he will take this as a lesson as we go forward together. He is and will always be a valued member of this team, and we are excited to have him back next week.
For Alexander, 26, this season has been unlike any other. Alexander’s back problem caused him to miss three games earlier in the season. Alexander returned to action with the win in Carolina, having missed six games due to a shoulder issue, though he was never placed on injured reserve.
