Unbelievable, The Brewers former head coach Craig John Counsell has announced his return to the team.

In a moment, Craig Counsell will break the Brewers record for most games managed.

Having spent the majority of his life with the squad, he is aware that winning isn’t the primary task.

Since 2015, Craig Counsell has served as the Milwaukee Brewers’ manager. He will surpass the franchise record for most games managed on Tuesday.Give credit…Quinn Harris

In sports, there is a paradox: the objective can never truly be the goal. Most people would be unhappy if that were the case, if winning a championship was the only thing that really counted. In the end, almost everyone loses.

For the most part of his life, Craig Counsell has been a Milwaukee Brewers fan. He worked as a boy attendant at the old County Stadium, running the speed-pitch booth and organizing fan letters for Robin Yount. He was a Brewers infielder for more than 700 games during his late 30s and early 40s. With 1,181 games managed, he will take the lead in the franchise on Tuesday at 52.

Counsell’s two World Series rings, though, seem to make fun of this kind of devotion. Counsell is the first player in baseball history to bat with the winning run on base twice in the bottom of the ninth inning of a Game 7 championship. He was the starting second baseman for two championship teams, the 1997 Florida Marlins and the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks. He sustained a rally in both instances, and his teams prevailed.

The Marlins and Diamondbacks have won titles in their fifth and fourth seasons, respectively, whereas the Brewers, who were founded in 1970 (like Counsell) following one season as the Seattle Pilots, have never done so. Is that equitable?
